Do you carry auto insurance on your car? How about insurance on your home? Do you have life insurance? What about accident or disability insurance? If you answered yes to any of these questions then YOU ARE A "PREPPER". Yep, you are one of those people who consider what might happen, the impact it would have on you and then you act now to mitigate or eliminate the impact of possible future "disasters". While you would never be "ready" for a disaster to strike, you want to be prepared in case one does and you pray one doesn't. Like you, the modern urban survivalist is not looking forward to a collapse of our social structure. He hopes there will never be one. He is consistently vigilant in doing his best to be involved in local and national issues. He is someone who contacts his state and federal representatives and petitions them for action. He prays at night that God will protect this blessed land and thanks Him for the opportunity to live here. He prays that our leaders will be responsible and do what is best for the country and honor and uphold the supreme law of the land, The Constitution of the United States of America. The modern urban survivalist recognizes many different potential threats to him and his family. He wants to try and prepare in order to protect his family and mitigate the impact of those threats. Examples of the threats the modern survivalist recognizes are: 1) Illness or injury that interrupts ability to work and provide an income or puts a strain on resources. 2) Loss of a Job. 3) Loss of a loved one. 4) Localized natural disaster such as a Flood, Wind, Rain & Hail damage, Tornado, Hurricanes, Tropical Storm, Volcanic activity, Earthquakes. 5) Localized man made threats such as Riots, Looting, Vandalism, Burglary, and Terrorists activity. 6) Biological threats, whether natural (such as a Swine Flue Pandemic) or manmade. 7) Larger regional, national or global threats which may be biological, environmental or the result of war. 8) Economic turmoil - decline in one or more of the markets impacting intangible and tangible assets. The typical modern urban survivalist is still working a 40 plus hour work week trying to eke out a living and make ends meet. He has begun thinking about a "simpler" life where material things matter a lot less and relationships and wholesome activities matter a whole lot more. He is trying to extract himself from the rat race of the 40 hour work week and he isn't trying to make his "fortune" at the expense of having his head buried in the sand and being oblivious to what is going on around him in the world by being too narrowly focused on monitory gain. He has thought about or is beginning to put a garden in the back yard, grow a few vegetables and is planting a fruit tree instead of a non-producing decorative tree. The modern urban survivalist dreams of extricating himself and his family from the densely populated city and retreating to a smaller town where community cares about each other and people are trying a little less to "keep up with the Jones's" and a little more to be a good neighbor. In using his common sense, the modern urban survivalist may go a little further than the ordinary hard working Joe in considering all of the "what might happen" scenarios, and prioritizing them from the most likely to the least likely and beginning his preparations thinking of the most likely. As his preparedeness level increases, the modern urban survivalist moves further out on the probability matrix preparing for the less probable disaster scenarios. The modern urban survivalist's goal is to try and improve his life now, as Jack Spirko says, "if times get tough or even if they don't". |
